AAS Statement on the October 2 Event at Assembly Hall
The Asian American Studies Program fully endorses the American Indian Studies Program's opposition to the event planned for October 2 to revive the "Chief."

Two and a half years after the University's long overdue, official removal of "Chief Illiniwek" as its symbol, this event has been approved by the University to be held in a University building and is sponsored by a student organization that is officially registered with the University and continues to use the "Chief," including in its name and on its website, presumably with the University's knowledge and consent.

We urge the University to be consistent and vigorous in carrying out its policy of "retiring" the "Chief" and to extricate itself immediately and completely from the October 2 event.
